Privacy Policy

Kayit is built so your interviews never leave your Mac. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what that means for your data.

The short version: Kayit does not collect, transmit, sell, or share your personal data. Your audio recordings, transcripts, quotes, and notes are processed and stored entirely on your device. We have no servers that receive your content and no account system.

1. Who this policy covers

This Privacy Policy describes how the Kayit application (“Kayit”, “the app”, “we”, “us”) handles information. It applies to the Kayit macOS application and this website, https://kayit.press. Kayit is a native macOS application that runs on your Mac (macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later, Mac with Apple chip (M1 or later)).

2. Information the app collects

None. Kayit does not collect personal information. Specifically:

  • There is no account, sign-up, or login. We never ask for your name, email, or any identifier to use the app.
  • Your audio files, transcripts, quotes, speaker labels, summaries, and notes stay on your device. They are never uploaded to us or to any third party.
  • Kayit contains no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and no third-party telemetry SDKs. We do not track you across apps or websites.
  • We do not build user profiles and we have no ability to see what you transcribe.

This is reflected in the app's privacy details on the App Store, where Kayit is listed under “Data Not Collected.”

3. Information stored on your device

Everything Kayit creates or uses is stored locally on your Mac, under your control:

  • Your media and transcripts. Audio you import and the .transcript.json, Markdown, and summary files Kayit generates are saved in a library folder you choose (for example, ~/Documents/Kayit).
  • App preferences. Settings such as your chosen library folder, export location, and interface options are stored in the standard macOS preferences system (UserDefaults) on your device. This required-reason API is declared in the app's privacy manifest and is used only to save your preferences within the app.
  • Machine-learning models. The speech-recognition and speaker-separation models are downloaded once (see below) and cached locally.

Kayit runs inside the macOS App Sandbox and accesses only the folders you explicitly grant it, using security-scoped bookmarks. It does not roam your file system.

4. Network connections

Kayit works offline for transcription. It makes network requests in only one situation:

  • One-time model download. The first time you transcribe (and the first time you use certain optional on-device AI features), Kayit downloads its machine-learning models over an encrypted HTTPS connection from Hugging Face (a model-hosting service). This transfers model data to your Mac. Your audio and transcripts are never part of these requests — no interview content is uploaded. After the download, transcription runs fully offline.

When your Mac contacts Hugging Face to fetch a model, that request is subject to Hugging Face's own privacy practices (for example, standard server logs such as IP address, inherent to any download). We do not send them any information about you, and Kayit itself does not add identifiers to the request.

Optional on-device AI. Kayit's summary and entity features run locally using downloaded models. Your transcript text is processed on your Mac and is not sent to any cloud AI service. Generative summaries can be turned off entirely in Settings.

5. Syncing folders & your responsibility

Because your files live on your device, where you keep them is up to you. If you place your Kayit library inside a folder that syncs to a cloud service (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, and similar), those services will sync your audio and transcripts under their terms and privacy policies — not ours. Kayit detects common syncing locations and warns you, but the final choice is yours. To keep interviews fully local, store them outside of syncing folders.

6. This website

This website is a static informational site. It does not set advertising or tracking cookies. The support contact form on this site is a demonstration form that does not currently transmit or store submissions on a server. You can reach us any time through our support page. The site loads web fonts from Google Fonts, which may receive your IP address as part of serving those font files.

7. Children's privacy

Kayit is a professional tool intended for general audiences and is not directed at children. Because we collect no personal information from anyone, we collect none from children.

8. Your rights

Privacy laws such as the GDPR (EU/UK) and CCPA/CPRA (California) give you rights over personal data a company holds about you. Because Kayit holds no personal data about you on any server, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export, or delete on our side. All of your content is already in your hands: you can view, move, or delete it directly on your Mac at any time. If you have a question about your rights, contact us through our support page.

9. Data security

Your content never leaves your device through Kayit, which removes the entire category of risk that comes with uploading interviews to a cloud service. The security of the files on your Mac is protected by macOS, the App Sandbox, and your own device security (such as FileVault disk encryption and your account password), which we recommend you enable.

10. Changes to this policy

If we change how Kayit handles information, we will update this page and revise the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect in a released version of the app.
